Weekend Workshops at the Vancouver Island School of Art
10:00 am to 5:00 pm
$150.00 for two day workshops (12 hrs instruction) or $75.00 for oneday workshops (6 hrs instruction)
Mark Making on Fabric July 5 & 6
Students discover the many ways to create pattern and design on fabric in this workshop. Students are guided through a series of sample making projects using simple print processes: stamping, monoprinting and screen printing in an interesting and straightforward way. Textile paints, thickened dyes and bronzing powders are explored through mark making, pattern and layering techniques. Using a variety of tools and direct application processes, participants will create a range of unique and delectable fabric pieces that can be further enhanced at home.
Material fee: $75 to include fabrics, paints and use of silk screens specially prepared by instructor

Fresco Techniques from the Renaissance: The Sinopia Panel July 19
This one day workshop is an introduction to the Renaissance technique of fresco, a timehonoured process where artists paint with pigments on freshly laid wet lime plaster. Participants can imaginatively travel in the footsteps of Italian Renaissance painters Michelangelo, Masaccio and Pontormo, learning the basics as they would have done – preparing panels, transferring drawings and painting a monochromatic fresco on a portable wooden panel. Participants are encouraged to consider combining this workshop with Fresco Techniques from the Renaissance: The Colour Fresco.
Material fee: $45 to cover the cost of a prepared panel, imported lime plaster and pigments

Watercolour Sketching July 19 & 20
This workshop introduces students to some basic watercolour techniques through the simple and casual process of sketching. Students learn to use the sketchbook as a way to record observations and ideas as well as how to turn the book into an art object in itself.

Photographing Downtown July 26
Instructor and photographer, d. bradley muir takes participants around the downtown area of Victoria and discusses the various ways one might approach photographing the city. The focus is on taking photographs of buildings and architectural details and students learn about ways to think about composition, light, texture and other details necessary for creating interesting photographs.

Sculpture: Installation Art July 26 & 27
This workshop introduces students to the world of sculptural installation. Working with personal objects, photos, furniture, clothing and fabric, students explore the possibility of creating private spaces in public places. Inclass work includes handson experimentation with materials and demonstrations of sculptural techniques and construction. Workshop includes discussions which focus on artists who challenge viewer participation, specifically artists who bring aspects of the private domain into public places and site specific artwork.

Comic Book Art July 26 & 27
This workshop introduces students to some basic approaches to comic book drawing. Students have the opportunity to expand their imagination as they create their own personal narratives through the combination of whimsical drawings and text. Drawing experience is not necessary.

This two day workshop gives students a brief introduction to the ideas and approaches behind abstract painting. Exercises focus on the formal composition structure of a painting as well as how to look at the ways the actual process of painting can inform surface and content.

Painting: Abstract Composition (PNTG w229SS08) July 7 11
This intensive workshop combines handson studio practice with lectures on approaches to abstraction as seen in the work of painters such as Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Richard Diebenkorn and Agnes Martin. Studio exercises focus on elements of technique and material issues, as well as inspiration and source material. Examples of exercises include analytic and synthetic approaches to subject matter, flat space in composition, and texture & materiality as colour. Oil and acrylic painters welcome.

Painting: Large Scale Abstraction (PNTG w232SS08) July 14 18
This intensive workshop combines handson studio practice with lectures on the work of abstract painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and Gerhard Richter. Studio exercises focus on elements of technique and material issues, as well as inspiration and source material. Examples of exercises include use of largescale supports and moving from observation to abstract imagery. Oil and acrylic painters welcome.

Papier Maché is an extremely versatile and inexpensive material and technique. In this workshop, students learn the basic techniques of creating an armature, building up layers and surface treatment. This workshop is a great introduction to working with threedimensional forms.

Have you always had the desire to paint with watercolours but did not know where to start? This intensive workshop is an ideal introduction to the medium because the focus is on basic materials, techniques and approaches. Exercises are designed to give a beginner a solid grounding in the medium. Subject matter includes still life objects, the model, the landscape as well as photographs and the imagination.

Monoprinting and Collage (PRNT w205SS08) July 21 – 25
This workshop focuses on a variety of monoprinting techniques that include the use of collage in a variety of forms. Students are encouraged to push the limits of their imagination by using a range of drawing and painting materials combined with a variety of found and exotic collage papers.
Material fee: $50 for printmaking materials and collage paper.

Documentary Photography (PHOT w205SS08) July 28 – August 1
This workshop provides an introduction to the medium of documentary imagemaking and includes an overview of historical and contemporary documentary photography. Students achieve a solid foundation for undertaking their own documentary photography projects and produce a portfolio of eight to fifteen resolved and technically sound black and white photographs. Workshop includes field work in and around downtown Victoria, to include both indoor and outdoor photography such as the interior of cafés and street scenes as well as time in the darkroom/classroom.

Painting: Series Development Workshop (PNTG w208SS08) July 28 – August 1
In this workshop students develop a series based on the theme of ‘Harvesting the Neighbourhood’. Students need to shoot a roll of 12 shots (minimum) of what they call their ‘neighbourhood’ and then bring these prints to the first class. Students are also asked to bring an example of a drawing or painting (finished or unfinished) that is representative of their personal style, to the first class. From the neighborhood shoot, a theme for a triptych emerges. The instructor conducts oneonone dialogues with each student to facilitate the production of a personal and individual body of work.

ACCENTUATE - A new Victoria art collective known as MMBB will showcase a utopian version of the Slide Room Gallery as an ultimate modern cultural landmark within the larger urban context of the city of Victoria. They use the concept of the condominium showroom as a model for their ‘display’.

Nel works in diverse media and techniques. The favorite themes of her work are people, landscapes, architecture and animals. |
Sarah Theophilus
A welsh born realist painter specializing in finely detailed oil pastel animal portraiture. For me, the focus of each work is the eye, and the story an animal can convey in a simple expression without saying a word. My joy is in the challenge of capturing that spirit and communication, and the soft touch of fur on a flat canvas. |
Brian Simons A self-taught artist who has been painting for about 25 years. He paints in bold, colourful fashion in both acrylics and oils. He paints in a more expressionist style without the use of fine detail. His numerous works include landscapes, figures, portraits, floral, cityscapes and marine paintings. |
Tobias Tomlinson Tobias Tomlinson has been a working potter for 35 years. Fire and ash of traditional Japanese firing techniques have brought new inspiration to his work. His translucent porcelain glows from within. Other inspirations include Mission Style and Arts and Crafts tradition from 1900 to 1925.
